History of the Committee of One Hundred

Bessie_Moore.png
The Committee of One Hundred has helped preserve Ozark craft traditions through the craft apprenticeship program which has provided funds for both the master artisan and apprentice for decades. The Committee has funded over 150 apprenticeships with some artisans still at the Folk Center and some growing their own businesses. This investment preserved Ozark craft traditions while also contributing to Arkansas' creative economy. The Music Roots program, Heritage Herb Gardens and many other investments have also been funded by the Committee.

Dr. Bessie Boehm Moore's vision of a statewide network of influential women dedicated to supporting the Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas was realized in 1974. Dr. Moore was a driving force behind the creation of the Folk Center and she wanted to spread the word about the newly opened center for folk culture and also knew that money would be needed for crafts apprenticeships and so much more!
